untitled (lollipop grid)
lollipops in wall
dimensions variable, floor to ceiling grid
2004-05

This piece represents the need to order desire. Order is that of pure relationship- how we choose to line up our thoughts, actions, selves, and desires in relation to one another; the sum being greater than the parts. This piece references the modern grids' split between spirit and matter, functioning both in the spatial and temporal. The grid serves as a myth- perceiving us to have sense of materialism while questioning belief; the candy calls into question the ways in which we both internally and externally order our desires. While making obvious connections to order and structure, the candy grid also references children's board games and evokes a sense of play; asking the viewer to establish rules of order, play, and desire. The polka dotted grip creates an optical illusion, appearing flat when viewed from a distance, and changes perceptive as you move in relation to the piece and the cast shadows. The physical qualities of candy evoke the senses allowing viewers to see, smell, and desire to taste the piece as the fragrant sugar aromatizes the space. The temporal aspects of candy cause the lollipops to slowly change shape, drip, create puddles, and eventually dissolve. Lollipops are installed directly into the wall. Dimensions variable depending on space.
